The joy of Teaching and Learning Languages

I have often believed that languages are thread which bind everything together. They embrace the whole within them- as concrete as cultural practices, religious beliefs, heartfelt experiences and events within life and. on the other hand, as abstract as fictious tales, incomplete dreams and aspirations, and future predictions with no explicit evidences.

Why is Language a real Joy?

1. It takes you to another world

2. It is capable of giving shape to your far off dreams and thoughts

3. It makes you learn new- whether Science, a Culture, A society, a New theory, concept, law or lifestyle stuff.

Comparison within Languages

History of Literatures is evident that no language can be treated above the other. Literature of each language has its glorified history which keeps it alive. The misfortune of present times as I see, lies in the loosening of the threads of languages.

Demolition of Languages

The youth today more often treats language only as subject and is far behind in realizing the deep roots of languages they are told to learn. And this is the result that abstraction a language can create has been restricted and quality of expression is declining. The major role in this devastation has been played by mixed languages. There are two main reasons which lead to this mixing of languages:

1. The intermixing of cultures

2. Lack of knowledge of a single language

The most common purpose of teaching or learning languages include:

1. To acquaint with the traditions and life of those to whom it belongs.

2. To carry the learners from concrete to abstract.

3. To help give words to flying emotions and thoughts for an effective communication and expression.

Probably, this is the reason I firmly believe that language can never be restricted to a curricular subject. The pre- defined syllabus only gives it a direction but can not set limits for it as Languages are absolutely limitless. Secondly, teaching a language cannot be imposed to a single teacher of that subject, rather, it is both right and duty of every subject teacher to tie the content of his/ her own subject with the knots of languages.

Tips to Teach Languages effectively

1. Just as you read and do for teaching other subjects, move from concrete to abstract that is from direct experiences to imaginative dilemmas.

2. The Topics of study should be planned according to the psychological age of children.

3. Start from simple and take it to complex. This holds good equally for vocabulary, grammar and sentence formation.

4. Follow the establish principle of

Listening - Speaking - Reading - Writing

the focus of teaching should be in same direction.
